Slideluck Potshow is proud to Slideluck Potshow is proud to announce Women's Work, a collaboration with Ladies Lotto that will be taking place at Los Angeles' finest photo gallery, Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles on Sunday, April 25th. At this multimedia slideshow and potluck dinner, artists from around the world will present work that illuminates aspects of the contemporary female experience.
This will be our first issue-based event of its kind and will explore the current state of women's lives - from the inspiring success stories to the profound adversities. In doing so, our aim is to celebrate the positive developments and to create dialog and awareness about the issues women face globally.
If you are interested in submitting a project to Women's Work, or know an artist who should, guidelines can be found here and the submission deadline is Thursday, April 1st. If you are interested in sponsoring or getting involved with this event, please let us know!

David DiMichele awarded C.O.L.A fellowship
David DiMichele has been awarded the C.O.L.A. (City of Los Angeles) Individual artist fellowship for 2009. As described in the press release from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs,
“DCA has awarded its 2009 City of Los Angeles (C.O.L.A.) Individual Artist Fellowships to fifteen exemplary mid-career artists. The professional and artistic caliber of these 15 Fellows is the reason why C.O.L.A. is a nationally recognized program. Los Angeles is one of a handful of municipalities honoring local artists with grant contracts to create and present new works for the public. Each Fellow is peer-reviewed in a non-thematic selection process and is granted $10,000. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis to bring the highest quality artistic and cultural services to Los Angeles residents and visitors. The C.O.L.A. Individual Artists Fellowships are awarded to honor a spectrum of the City’s most creative artists who dedicate themselves to an ongoing body of excellent work, represent a relevant progression through their pieces or series, exemplify a generation of core ideas in their field, garner respect from their peers, and serve as role models for other artists. Since 1990, DCA has awarded over 115 fellowships to outstanding mid-career artists for the conception, creation, production, and presentation of new works.”
DiMichele will be exhibiting 5 new large scale photographic works in the C.O.L.A. Individual Artist Fellowship Exhibition. The exhibit opens Thursday, May 14, and remains on view through Sunday, July 12, 2009. The Exhibition’s Opening Reception will be held on Sunday, May 17, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. -

Book release: NIGHT / SHIFT by Lynn Saville is now available for pre-sale
An exhibition of Lynn Saville's work will follow the release of the book from July 18 - August 22, 2009 at Kopeikin Gallery.
NIGHT / SHIFT by Lynn Saville will be released on May 18, 2009. The book (published by Random House and The Monacelli Press) includes her signature color photographs of offbeat New York cityscapes at twilight and at dawn. In describing Saville's work for the book's introduction, Arthur C. Danto writes, "Atget recorded Paris in the early morning, before anyone was about. We feel his presence in the surrounding emptiness he has kept for the generations...Saville is his New York counterpart, the Atget of vanishing New York, prowling her city at the other end of the day, picking up pieces of the past into the present, just before it is swallowed by shadows..." -

Kahn & Selesnick: Worlds Discovered
January 25 – April 26, 2009Artists Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick (NY) take viewers on two marvelous journeys through their panoramic photography. First, a 60-foot panorama depicts astronauts on their long voyage to the moon and back. This image, shot and assembled with multiple sets, live actors, and hand-built models allows viewers to walk along and travel with the characters in their celestial adventure.
The second journey is to Eisbergfreistadt, a fictional town forced to build on an iceberg. Based on the true events of a massive iceberg that ran aground on the Baltic seaport of Lubek in 1923, the images and artifacts from Eisbergfreistadt tell the story of life in this frigid settlement and how the people there managed to survive and even thrive despite the daily terror of impending environmental forces. -

photo-eye Gallery, 376 Garcia Street, Santa Fe, New Mexico, is pleased to announce The Galisteo Basin Photography Project, a benefit exhibition by renowned fine art and documentary New Mexico photographers. The Mission of the Project, founded by six residents in March 2008, is to raise public awareness of what may be irretrievably lost if the Galisteo Basin—a unique area defined by the meandering 55-mile long Galisteo River, born in the Pecos Wilderness and completing its westward journey as it merges into the Rio Grande River on the tribal lands of Santo Domingo Pueblo—is allowed to become an oil and gas production field. Due to the growing awareness and outcry of residents, linked by a strong grassroots movement, both the State of New Mexico, under the leadership of Governor Bill Richardson, and the County Commissioners of Santa Fe, halted further exploration and development for oil and natural gas in early 2008 by placing Santa Fe County under the protection of moratoria. The Galisteo Basin is recognized as a New Mexico treasure: A benchmark of fragile beauty, vast historic and archaeological resources, and the traditional lifestyles of Northern New Mexico. The exhibition is curated by Rixon Reed, Director of Photo-eye Gallery, and Mary Anne Redding, Curator of Photography at the Palace of the Governors/New Mexico History Museum. Fifty percent of monies raised from the sale of an Individual and Special Boxed Set Edition of all of the exhibition’s photographs, as well as twenty-five percent from the sale of the exhibited wall prints, will be donated to the following non-profit organizations: Drilling Santa Fe, New Mexico Environmental Law Center, and the Oil & Gas Accountability Project.

'High Glitz' at Torch Gallery, Amsterdam
TORCH Gallery is pleased to present the work of Los Angeles-based US photographer Susan Anderson for the first time in Europe. Her new series High Glitz: The Surreal World of Child Beauty Pageants will be on show at the gallery from the 29 th of January through the 21 st February 2009.
High Glitz is a documentary portrait series that looks into the US subculture of child beauty pageants and, more particularly, into the ‘High Glitz’ genre, which name refers to the young competitors’ couture costumes embellished with glitter. The ‘glitzy’ appearance of the girls is further perfected with a broad array of cosmetic preparations that go from glamour makeup to lacquered hairstyle and flippers (false front teeth veneers). Anderson’s camera records in graphic detail the result of this time-consuming transformation process.
For the past three years, Anderson has been travelling throughout the States to shoot these privileged portraits on location. Setting up her studio amidst the colourful spectacle, she captured the young girls at the height of their performance. Anderson explains “I make a point of not directing my subjects, but provide a platform for them to present themselves to the camera. ” Still whereas the children might take part enthusiastically to these ritual spectacles of crafted female beauty (let’s not forget that Britney Spears was discovered at a child pageant) , as Lois Ann Holey-Dort wrote in The Nation: “Playing dress-up is part of being a kid, but when adults step in, apply the makeup, the clothes and instructions on composure, posture and gesture the game becomes something else. A new version of the child as both she and others perceive her emerges […] Children begin to think of themselves in the manner in which they are valued, in other words, in terms of surface beauty. Their lives become an act, a mark of grown-up affectation that they are unable to remove after the performance ends.”
Children’s pageants are a fascinating phenomenon with its over- the- top aesthetics and its billions in revenue. However, more than anything, they represent a strange microcosm of America itself. Its values of beauty, success and glamour reflected in the dreams of thousands of young girls.
Susan Anderson is a Los Angeles-based commercial, editorial and fine art photographer specialized in fashion, portraiture, and conceptual/narrative work.
Having earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree form the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago, Anderson relocated to Los Angeles in 2001. Her editorial portrait and fashion work has appeared in a variety of magazines including, Los Angeles, People, Glamour, The Robb Report and Playboy.
High Glitz: The Surreal World of Child Beauty Pageants will be on show from the 29 th of January through the 21 th of February 2009 at TORCH Gallery in Amsterdam. High Glitz the book will be published in 2009, by powerHouse Books, Brooklyn, NY USA.

Minds of Mountainfilm: Chris Jordan
Photographer Chris Jordan sits down with Aaron Huey to discuss his latest work, Running the Numbers, which was exhibited at Mountainfilm 2008. Running the Numbers forces viewers to examine issues of American consumption and mass culture through extremely large digital photo constructions depicting the number of Americans in the penal system and the number of cell phones discarded everyday among others. This work, a follow up to Jordan's Intolerable Beauty, seeks to evoke feelings in the viewers, to awake them from malaise by translating these massive numbers we hear everyday into a visual language. Jordan and fellow photographer Huey discuss creating work that is not just about beauty, the ironies/hypocrisies of documenting consumption and the meaning of Mountainfilm.

Technology of the 21st Century gave artist Jeffrey Milstein the artistic tools for his remarkable and beautiful images. His photographs have been the subject of a recent book, "Aircraft: The Jet as Art," international exhibitions, and were selected for the 2008 New York Photo Fest exhibition "New Typologies." Milstein talked about his work on view at the Ulrich, discussing his lifelong love of flight as well as the typologizing current in contemporary art in which his work takes part.

PHOTO FINISH: HIGHER CALLING
In 2005, the photographer Jona Frank came across an article in The New Yorker by Hanna Rosin, about Patrick Henry, an evangelical college in Virginia. The article, which Rosin later expanded into the book “God’s Harvard,” discussed the school’s commitment to preparing young Christians for careers in politics. Frank was intrigued by the descriptions of the students—most of whom had been home-schooled prior to enrolling at Patrick Henry—who aimed to “glorify God with their appearance,” and who seemed possessed of an assuredness beyond their years. In 2006, she headed to Virginia, and during the next two years she spent time photographing students at Patrick Henry and their families. The resulting catalogue, “Right,” presents a visual world of simplicity and organization—clothes are plain (but for the occasional stars-and-stripes tie), walls mostly bare. Frank finds her subjects’ vulnerability. They are, she writes in her epilogue, at “the pivotal moment between exploration and discovery,” about to enter a world “at odds with the homes they grew up in.”
